I have a question about the original creditor. Here is the situation: My girlfriend recently received a letter from a credit union in Chicago asking her to make a payment on a credit card account opened in her maiden name(which she hasn't used for 25 years). Plus she has never been to Chciago or anyplace east of the Mississippi.

Should she consider this as a communication from an original creditor or a 3rd party debt collector?
The answer to your question can't be answered so simply. The first problem is that you have not told us what state she lives in. That can make a difference.

Secondly, it really don't make any difference because it could well be a case of identity theft from what you are telling us. Depends on whether or not she ever applied for the card. Don't sound like she did.

Too many possibilities here to really give you a solid answer.
